When Goodbye Hurts

Losing a pet is one of the hardest things many of us willever go through. Pets are more than companions, they’re family, woven into our routines, our homes and our hearts. Saying goodbye leaves a space that feels impossibly large.

Grief is Different for Everyone

Just as every bond is unique, so is every grief journey. Some people feel waves of sadness, others a numb quiet and some experience both in turns. There is no “right” way to grieve. What matters most is allowing yourself the time and kindness to feel what you feel.

The Emotions That Arise

It’s common to experience:

·      Loneliness without your pet’s daily presence

·      A loss of structure or routine

·      Wondering if you did the right thing or if youcould have done more

·      That last feeling, guilt,  is something many owners share. You may find yourself replaying the decision in your head, questioning whether it was too soon or too late. Please know that these feelings are a natural part of bereavement. We’ve written a separate blog dedicated to this topic if you’d like a deeper exploration.

Ways to Cope

·      Create a Memory: Keep a paw print, light a candle, plant something in the garden or make a photo album.

·      Lean on Support: Friends and family may not always understand, but there are people who do.

·      Reach Out: The Blue Cross offers a free, confidential Pet Bereavement Support Service every day of the year, by phone, email or webchat. It’s a safe space to talk to someone who understands what you’re going through.

·      Seek Professional Help: If grief feels overwhelming or prolonged, counselling can provide valuable support.

A Final Thought

Grief is, in many ways, love with nowhere to go. It is a reflection of the depth of your bond. Over time, the sharp edges soften, leaving memories that bring warmth as well as sadness. Be gentle with yourself.
